How it works

Unfortunately, it is not possible to wake up in the morning with the idea to do an experiment with neutrons or x-rays out of the blue. One has to prepare this well in advance!

For x-ray experiments at GALAXI, just get all the information here.

Dedicated neutron scattering instruments are provided by JCNS at:

• Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany,
• Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France,
• Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in Oak Ridge, USA.

Beam time at the MLZ instruments is offered to scientists from all over the world regardless of the country in which they are conducting their research, while beam time at the ILL and SNS instruments is provided to German affiliated users only.

In order to transform your idea into a publication via a successful experiment, please follow the steps below. The links will offer detailed information. Be aware: There are several small differences within the workflows at MLZ, ILL, and SNS – so please make sure you studied the page for “your” location well!

BEFORE

• find the instrument(s) you need from our list
• discuss with the instrument scientist – use the instrument links to get in touch

ASK FOR BEAM TIME

• submit a proposal at MLZ, ILL or SNS
• meet the deadline
• proposals will be reviewed by the MLZ Review Panels based on scientific merit

FOR THE EXPERIMENT

• meet the location’s requirements for your visit at MLZ, ILL or SNS

AFTERWARDS  

• if financial support was granted: submit your reimbursement documents
• write your experimental report
• write a publication and meet our terms of reference
