High-profile research

At Forschungszentrum Jülich, you will work on your doctoral research together with leading experts in physics, materials science, nanotechnology, and information technology, among other disciplines. On our large campus with an area of 2.2 km², you will benefit from the infrastructure of 10 research institutes and more than 60 organizational units for simulation with supercomputers, research with neutrons, imaging techniques for medicine, nanotechnology tools, and much more. Some of the instruments available at Jülich represent the world’s most advanced technology such as high-performance electron microscopes at the Ernst Ruska-Centre.The same applies for SAPHIR – the simulation of atmospheric photochemistry in a large reaction chamber, or the state-of-the-art large-scale 7-tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner which can be switched between research and CE-certified clinical operation modes.



Another internationally respected facility is the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), which provides high-performance computing capacity for projects all over the world. It is used for projects in the fields of astrophysics, biophysics, chemistry, fluid dynamics, earth and environment, materials science, and many more.






Support within a strong team

An innovative spirit is created within interdisciplinary and diverse teams. As a doctoral researcher, you will work together with scientists, technical support staff, and cooperation partners from Germany and abroad. It is particularly inspiring to exchange ideas with experienced scientists from different disciplines and nationalities. Many scientists at Jülich have achieved pioneering results. The work of Nobel Laureate Peter Grünberg, for example, forms the foundation of the future-oriented technology of spintronics. Jülich researchers have an enormous range of instruments and devices at their disposal. Researchers can even have their own instruments built if they require a new device for their project and the necessary funding is available.
