Dynamic Neural Fields: Theory and Applications

Dynamic Neural Fields (DNFs) have been introduced in the 1970s by Wilson, Cowan and Amari as simplified mathematical models of pattern formation in neural tissue in which the interaction of billions of neurons is treated as a continuum. These models take the form of nonlinear integro-differential equations on a spatially extended domain in which the interaction kernel represents the spatial distribution of synaptic weights between neurons. In my talk I will motivate why the theoretical framework of DNFs is still a very active area of multidisciplinary research. With examples form our own research, I show how DNFs can be used 1) to explain aspects of neuronal population dynamics observed in cortical areas, 2) to bridge the neuronal and behavioral level of brain function, and 3) to endow autonomous robots with higher-level cognitive skills.
