Molecular and Cellular Physiology

Ion channels, ion transporters and receptors are critical for the generation, the propagation and the transmission of cellular signals. We use a combination of experimental and computational approaches to study the function of these proteins at the molecular level and to understand their contributions to cell and organ functions. Our work aims at understanding the role of ion channels, ion transporters and receptors under pathological conditions and at contributing to the development of novel therapeutic approaches for human diseases.

Optimiertes künstliches Sehen: DFG fördert neues Graduiertenkolleg

Jülicher Forscher haben mit Kollegen der RWTH Aachen und der Universität Duisburg-Essen das Graduiertenkolleg „Innovative Schnittstellen zur Retina für optimiertes künstliches Sehen – InnoRetVision“ ins Leben gerufen. Ziel ist die Entwicklung neuer Technologien für Retinaimplantate und die Erforschung der biologischen Veränderungen im Sehsystem bei Retinaerkrankungen.

Supercomputer Provides New Insights into the Function of Glutamate Transporters

Jülich, 7 October 2019 – Using simulations on the JURECA supercomputer, Jülich researchers have decoded a coupling mechanism that drives glutamate transporters in the brains of mammals. These proteins, called excitatory amino acid transporters, or EAATs for short, remove the neurotransmitter glutamate from the synaptic cleft between two nerves. The researchers' article has been chosen for the cover of the latest issue of the renowned EMBO Journal.
