Large-Scale Data Management and Analysis

The portfolio topic "Large-Scale Data Management and Analysis" addresses the increasing amount of scientific data. It will develop and integrate tools for data management and analysis into the scientific life cycle of selected applied sciences through the introduction of "Data Life Cycle Labs" and a distributed cross-sectional "Data Services Integration Team".

LSDMA project structure

The community specific "Data Life Cycle Labs" are the core of the project. Each lab has one or more initial topics:

  • Energy: smart grids, battery research, fusion research
  • Earth and Environment: climate models, environmental satellite data
  • Health: virtual human brain map
  • Key Technologies: synchrotron radiation, nanoscopy, high throughput microscopes, electron-microscope imaging techniques
  • Structure of Matter: large instruments (e.g. Facility for Antiprotons and Ions Research (FAIR)), heavy ion research, elementary particle physics

The DLCLs are complemented by the "Data Service Integration Team". Its generic R&D focuses on requirements and components of importance to more than one DLCL. It also communicates closely with the providers of storage resources.
