Helmholtz-ERC Recognition Award

On the molecular level, life is orchestrated through an interplay of many biomolecules, and many health disorders having molecular origins. Knowledge of a biomolecule’s structure is crucial for understanding its function. Yet despite incredible progress in experimental structure determination techniques, many important biomolecules are still not structurally resolved. An orthogonal theoretical approach are structure prediction techniques. Through the statistical analysis of evolutionarily closely related sequences we could accurately infer pairs of residues in spatial contact within biomolecules to guide the prediction of biomolecular structures when used in combination with molecular modelling techniques. Now, we want to focus on ribonucleic acids (RNA), which are ubiquitous in cell physiology and difficult to structurally resolve. Given the link of structure and function, this interdisciplinary work promises far reaching impact in fields ranging from basic molecular biology to pharmacological and medical research and applications.
