Pedestrian Dynamics - Social Psychology

Our research group uses experiments, field studies and interviews to study social psychological aspects of pedestrian dynamics and behavior in crowds.

Social Psychology

The research group “social psychology of pedestrian dynamics” studies the experience of being in a crowd and the influence of social psychological parameters on pedestrian dynamics. We follow three clusters of research questions:

  • the dynamic of social norms in pedestrian dynamics
  • the experience of being in a crowd and the effects of pedestrian dynamics on the well-being of participants
  • the influence of motivation on pedestrian dynamics

We follow a multimethod approach and use quantitative as well as qualitative methods, including questionnaire ratings, psycho-physiological data and interview transcripts.

Our research group was established in 2019 and works in close cooperation with the chair of social theory and social psychology at the Ruhr-University Bochum.
