Nuclear Disarmament: Experts Test Monitoring Procedures at Jülich

Jülich, 17 September 2019 – “Trust, but verify,” as the saying goes: effective verification mechanisms are crucial for nuclear disarmament, yet carrying out the necessary inspections is extremely complex. How can it be ensured that a nuclear warhead has been destroyed if the inspectors are not allowed access to the weapons system? International experts have developed a procedure to solve this difficulty. A practice drill coordinated by a German–French team is currently being carried out at Forschungszentrum Jülich, during which the procedure will be tested on a simulated warhead under conditions that are as realistic as possible.
