IEK-10 focuses on the development of models and algorithms for simulation and optimization of decentralized, integrated energy systems. Such systems are characterized by high spatial and temporal variability of energy supply and demand as well as by a high degree of interdependence of material and energy flows. Research at IEK-10 aims to provide scalable and faster than real-time capable methods and tools which enable the energy-optimal, cost-efficient and safe design and operation of future energy systems.

Senior scientist with PhD - Energy System Engineering: Control Solutions

Your Job:

The IEK-10 is developing a new team that will focus on the development of hardware and software for the control of energy systems. We aim at establishing a world leading facility for the development and verification of decentralized solutions for the control of modern energy systems.
We are looking for a person that will help to build up and lead this team. This person will also be responsible of the design, development and operation of a “Hardware-in-the-loop”-infrastructure and of the scientific outcome, in particular:

  • Develop - together with Prof. Benigni - a plan for the research team
  • Design, development and operation of a “hardware-in-the-loop” laboratory
  • Conception and design of decentralized control solutions for energy systems
  • Supervise research assistants (PhD), MS and BS students and software developers working in this area
  • Oversee the acquisition process of the needed laboratory equipment
  • Participate in the development of research proposals to be submitted to external agencies
  • Giving presentations at conferences
  • Publications in scientific journals
  • Helping with establishing cooperations/networks with internal and external partners (e.g., RWTH, IEK, Helmholtz)

Your Profile:

  • Very well completed scientific university studies (Master with subsequent PhD) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer or Computational Engineering Science
  • Extended publication record
  • Very good communication skills in English
  • Significant previous experience in at least two of the following areas: Hardware-in-the-loop and real-time Simulation, FPGA programming, Control methods development, Communication protocols
  • Good technical and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with others in an international environment
  • Experience in guiding Bachelor, Master and PhD students
  • Experience in presenting research results at international conferences
  • Experience in acquisition of third-party funded projects and their coordination
