The Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Materials Synthesis and Processing (IEK-1) offers a dynamic and international work environment. We develop materials and components for highly efficient future energy conversion and storage systems (in particular, oxide ceramic fuel cells, solid-state batteries, thermal barrier coatings for gas turbines and gas separation membranes). The main focus is put on inorganic materials which are processed as functional layers via gas phase or powder deposition. Our core competences allow for a rapid transfer of scientific results for industrial implementation.

We are offering a

PhD Position in Materials Science: "Simulation-Guided Development of Cathode Materials through Doping"

Your Job:

The aim of this project is to find superior cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries through doping or substitution with non-transition and transition metal cations. The goal is to improve the mechanical and chemical stability as well as ionic and electronic conductivity of the cathode materials.

Your tasks focus on:

  • Study effect of various dopants on conductivity and stability of cathode materials using ab-initio-based approaches such as density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) as well as ab initio atomistic thermodynamics and kinetics approaches
  • Investigate segregation of dopant at the surface of cathode materials using DFT calculation
  • Modeling influence of doping on cation interchange and Li-ion migration at interfaces between cathodes and solid electrolytes using DFT calculation and AIMD simulation

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in materials science, chemistry or physics with good final grade
  • Preliminary knowledge about quantum mechanics and / or Quantum chemistry and / or modeling
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Strong ability to work in team and flexibility
  • Willigness to show engagement

Our Offer:

  • Outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure – ideal conditions for successfully completing a doctoral degree
  • A highly motivated group as well as an international and interdisciplinary working environment at one of Europe`s largest research establishments
  • Chance of participating in (international) conferences and project meetings
  • Continuous, professional support by your scientific supervisor
  • Further development of your personal strengths, e.g. via a comprehensive further training programme
  • Pay in line with 50 % of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) pay higher than the basic pay may be possible
  • Usually a contract for the duration of 3 years
