The Subinstitute for Energy and Climate Research, Stratosphere (IEK-7), studies chemical, microphysical and dynamical processes in the upper troposphere and stratosphere and the role they play in the climate system. We are seeking a new Ph.D. student in the Theory Group that focuses on numerical simulations of chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere. The aim of the work is investigate bromine and chlorine chemistry using the Lagrangian Chemical Transport Model CLaMS.

The PhD project will be funded by the BMBF program ROMIC-2 starting
as part of the group project SCI-HI (Surface Climate Impacts of Halogen Induced Stratospheric Ozone Changes).

We are offering a

PhD Position "Investigation of bromine and chlorine"

Your Job:

A major aspect of the proposed work will be the simulation of very short-lived halogen sources gases (VSLS). These VSLS especially contribute to the stratospheric bromine budget which is important for the ozone chemistry. Sources, chemistry and transport of VSLS are not yet understood sufficiently.

The task of the PhD candidate are:

  • Extension of the CLaMS chemistry scheme to include VSLS and investigate their contribution to the stratospheric halogen loading
  • Validation of model results using a suite of atmospheric observations of halogen compounds, both from earlier observation and from observations by the German high altitude and long range research aircraft HALO, in particular the aircraft campaign SouthTRAC that is based in southern Argentina planned for the time between September and November 2019
  • Tight collaboration with the universities of Frankfurt and Heidelberg and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) within the project SCI-HI

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences or a related field (e.g. computer science) with good final grade (German system equivalent 2.0 or better)
  • Very good numerical and programming skills are essential; knowledge of Fortran is an advantage
  • Experience in scientific computing on high performance computers
  • Experience with Python and IDL plotting software and with a Linux environment is of advantage

Our Offer:

  • Outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure – ideal conditions for successfully completing a doctoral degree
  • A highly motivated group as well as an international and interdisciplinary working environment at one of Europe`s largest research establishments
  • Chance of participating in (international) conferences and project meetings
  • Continuous, professional support by your scientific supervisor
  • Further development of your personal strengths, e.g. via a comprehensive further training programme
  • Pay in line with 67,5 % of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund)
  • Usually a contract for the duration of 3 years
