The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates supercomputers of the highest performance class, enabling scientists and engineers in Germany and Europe to tackle some of the most complex and challenging problems of our time.

The Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy (HDS-LEE) provides an interdisciplinary environment for educating the next generation of data scientists in close contact to domain-specific knowledge and research. All three domains - life & material sciences, earth sciences and energy systems/materials - are characterized by the generation of huge heteroneneously structured data sets, which have to be evaluated in order to obtain a holistic understanding of very complex systems.

We are offering a

PhD position „Binding interface classification employing image recognition”

Your Job:

  • You will develop a protein binding interface comparison based on interface images and recent image recognition algorithms.
  • You will validate and apply the approach to three fundamental questions: I) function prediction; II) off-target prediction and drug repurposing to prevent side-effects in drug discovery or apply an existing therapeutic to a new disease indication, respectively; III) protein-protein interaction prediction

Your Profile:

  • Excellent Master`s degree in (structural or molecular) bioinformatics, chemistry, biochemistry, or biophysics
  • Strong background in (structural or molecular) bioinformatics, computational biochemistry/chemistry, or data science
  • High interest in working in an interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Profound programming knowledge in at least one scripting language and one high-level language (preferably Phython and C++)
  • Excellent knowledge of written and oral English: TOEFL or equivalent evidence of English-speaking skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently
  • Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • A high Level of scholarship as indicated, for example, by bachelor and master study transcripts
