The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), embedded in the lively research environment of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, is one of the three national supercomputing centres in Germany. It is partnering with leading technology providers to co-design hardware architectures for future supercomputers.

In this context we are offering a

PhD position specialising in the identification of application requirements and co-design

Your Job:

You will perform research on the analysis and identification of application requirements and their implications on high performance computing systems and components. The application requirements will be fed as co-design input for the development of a future server processor in the context of the European Processor Initiative (EPI) project. For this processor a system-on-a-chip (SoC) design is pursued to facilitate, in particular, its integration in a scalable, dense supercomputer architecture.

  • Research on methodologies for defining requirements of scientific computing applications for micro-architecture as well as processor and system architecture
  • Contribute to the implementation of application benchmarks and mini-applications
  • Evaluate processor architecture based on models and simulators
  • Estimate the impact of different design parameters on application performance

Your Profile:

  • University degree in relevant computational science areas like physics, chemistry, biology or computer science
  • Background in application development and/or application performance analysis, computer architectures and/or computational sciences
  • Experience in programming in C or C++ and in using scripting languages commonly used on Unix systems
  • Experience in parallel programming is desirable
  • Background in processor design or similar qualifications (e.g. FPGA design) are considered useful
  • Good command of English
  • Ability and willingness to work in an international, interdisciplinary and distributed teams as well as to assume responsibility
