Master thesis: Electrochemical Characterization of Alloy Anodes for Metal-Air Batteries

IEK-9 Energy Materials group is currently looking for a Master thesis candidate who possesses the qualification below for the earliest possible employment date.

The Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Fundamental Electrochemistry (IEK-9) focuses its research activities on the experimental investigation of electrochemical and kinetic properties of the charge transport and interfacial reactions of novel energy storage systems. Metal–air batteries are promising and attractive energy storage systems for mobile and stationary applications due to their high specific energies compared to Li-ion batteries. To have a better understanding of the effect of the microstructure of Zn based alloy anodes on the electrochemical performance of the Zn–air batteries, preparation of the synthesized materials and their electrochemical and microscopic characterizations are essential.

Your Tasks:

  • Preparation of synthesized alloy anodes with metallographic techniques (Embedding, grinding, polishing, cutting/sectioning, etching)
  • Characterization of the microstructure of prepared materials before and after battery operation with optical and laser scanning microscope and SEM
  • Electrochemical investigations of the underlying battery processes during battery operation

Your Profile:

  • Ongoing master education in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or Electrical Engineering
  • Theoretical knowledge on electrochemistry and batteries
  • Experience on electrochemistry and microscopy as well as working in the laboratory
  • Fluent in English and good computer skills
