Current Status of the AVR Fuel Elements

Jülich, 15.12.2014 - Forschungszentrum Jülich has instructed the operators of the Ahaus interim storage facility, the GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH (GNS), to resume the licensing applications for the transport and storage of the AVR fuel elements in Ahaus, which were suspended at the end of 2012. This step is being taken as it will only become clear whether the fastest path towards removing the fuel elements from the interim storage facility in Jülich, namely transporting them to the USA, is feasible after the conclusion of an environmental impact assessment in the USA in spring 2015. At the beginning of July 2014, the competent nuclear regulatory authority, the Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, ordered the immediate removal of the nuclear fuel from the existing interim storage facility at Jülich.
