A Crowded Physics Lesson

Jülich/Köln/Wuppertal, 6 November 2014 - From mid-November, students from two secondary schools in Wuppertal will experience an unusual physics lesson. In a collaborative project involving the two schools, Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium and Gymnasium Bayreuther Straße, as well as the University of Wuppertal, University of Cologne, and Forschungszentrum Jülich, the students will take part in experiments which will explore aspects of pedestrian dynamics. The project will make students aware of the dangers that can arise in large crowds of people or when buildings are being evacuated. They will learn how to prepare for large events and to behave more safely in tightly-packed crowds. The students will also carry out their own measurements and analyses of experiments.
