Where Caffeine Hits the Brain

Jülich, 22 October 2012 – A stimulating cup of coffee or tea is appreciated all over the world. However, until now it was unknown where exactly the caffeine contained in these beverages and in chocolate has its effect on the human brain. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich have now been able to demonstrate for the first time that in humans, the psychoactive substance produces its activating effect primarily in the highly developed areas of the cerebrum referred to as association areas. These are responsible for complex cognitive association and evaluation processes. The scientists have published their results in the "Journal of Nuclear Medicine".
