Getting to the Root of the Problem

Pot size influences plant growth

Jülich, 2 July 2012 – Jülich plant researchers have joined forces with Spanish colleagues to take pot luck. Using imaging techniques, they observed for the first time how the roots of potted plants behave during the growth phase. They also discovered that doubling the pot size leads to a more than 40 % increase in plant size. They presented their results at the Society for Experimental Biology's annual main meeting in Salzburg, Austria, and in an online publication in the latest issue of the journal Functional Plant Biology.
