Jülich Honours Former Polish Prime Minister for Commitment to European Research Policy

Brussels/Jülich, 16 October 2006 - Forschungszentrum Jülich presented the prestigious MEP Award to Jerzey Buzek in Brussels previous week. The former Polish Prime Minister and current Member of the European Parliament received the award in recognition of his achievements in European research policy. The MEP Awards are awarded in cooperation with The Parliament Magazine.
Jerzey Buzek has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 and has focused his efforts on the promotion of clean coal technology, which aims to make the use of coal environmentally friendly for the production of energy. While working on the Seventh Research Framework Programme, Buzek pushed hard for energy research to be recognised as a key priority area and was also the voice of Europe's universities. He received the MEP Award in recognition of his outstanding commitment. More than 300 guest from the European Legislative and Executive attended the award ceremony in Brussels.
From 1997 to 2001, Buzek was responsible for steering the course of Poland as Prime Minister. During the 80's, he was a member of the anti-communist movement, Solidarnosc. Buznek is a trained chemical engineer.
Forschungszentrum Jülich was delighted to be able to honour Jerzy Buzek as a "kindred soul". For a number of decades, researchers at Jülich have been working on the development of materials and methods to make gas and coal power plants more efficient and cleaner. Heat resistant ceramic coatings from Jülich can be found in modern turbines. As part of a new project, Jülich scientists are concentrating their materials competency in an effort to make carbon dioxide separation possible with ceramic filters: an energy-efficient method of keeping the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

The MEP Award is awarded annually in eight categories by The Parliament Magazine in cooperation with partners throughout Europe. The awards go to members of the European Parliament who have made particularly important contributions to European politics. The winners are decided on according to category by a six-person jury made up of journalists or by a poll conducted amongst the members and staff of the European Parliament. Forschungszentrum Jülich sponsors the award in the area of research and technology.
