Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund visits Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH

The management team of the Nigerian government Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) led by its Executive Secretary Prof. Suleiman Bogoro visited Forschungszentrum Jülich on Monday 23 September, 2019. TETFUND is an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria established by act of law to promote sound tertiary education in Nigeria by funding manpower development, infrastructure and equipment for education and research in Nigerian tertiary institutions. TETFUND has over the years been funding early-career Nigerian scientists to carry out PhD studies in reputable institutions across the globe. Recently, TETFUND has established partnership with the DAAD that has made it possible that TETFUND scholars can also come to Germany for their studies.

The TETFUND delegation visited Forschungszentrum Jülich on a fact-finding mission aimed at exploring options of hosting TETFUND scholars in Jülich and identifying areas of research interest for general collaboration between Jülich and Nigerian tertiary institutions. In his welcome address and presentation, Prof. Harald Bolt, member of board of directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich expressed his gratitude to the TETFUND team for their visit and for identifying Jülich as a potential partner. He presented an overview of the research activities and focus areas of the research centre noting that Jülich has the relevant competence and know-how to partner with African institutions. He remarked in conclusion that the research centre is willing to partner with TETFUND in their effort of supporting education and research in Nigeria. In his response, Prof. Bogoro expressed his fascination at the enormous cutting-edge research and infrastructure on Jülich campus and thanked Prof. Bolt for hosting his team. In optimism, he stated that TETFUND is poised to drastically improve the education and research landscape of Nigeria through its capacity building program for young scientists. He concluded that TETFUND will follow up on this visit for further engagement with Jülich.
