Large Scale Nuclear Physics Equipment (IKP-4)

Precise Particle Beams for Hadron and Nuclear Physcis Experiments

The IKP-4 is responsible for operating the large scale nuclear physics experiments at Forschungszentrum Jülich. This includes operation of the COoler SYnchrotron COSY. In addition, staff at IKP-4 develops, plans and builds new technology for new accelerators around the world.

What we do...

At IKP-4 scientist and engineers are working on all questions concerning the acceleration and storage of charged particles. This includes the accleration in high frequency cavities, precise control over flight trajectories in magnetic fields as well as beam cooling and diagnostics. The staff at IKP-4 ensures that all nuclear physics experiments at Forschungszentrum Jülich are effeiciently run and produce optimal results. In addition to operating the COoler SYnchrotron COSY in Jülich we are also active in developing new particle accelerator technology. Since 2012 the IKP-4 plans and builds the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR) at the international accelerator center FAIR (Faciltiy for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt. Once operational the HESR is supposed to store and provide antiprotons and heavy ions.
